The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking 2 Landscape Designers to join our landscape architecture office in Shoreline! We are looking for people who not only have a passion for the environment and landscape design but who can comfortably work at a desk, or out in the field. This person will be involved in a variety of large-scale infrastructure projects while working to ensure the health of the surrounding environment.  The successful candidate will be involved in the analysis, design, contract preparation, construction, and long-term management of transportation landscape projects. The work includes designing and preparing contract plans, inspecting roadside and environmental restoration construction work, and guiding crews during plant establishment.

This position will ultimately integrate transportation facilities into the natural and built environment and meet the functional needs, policy goals, commitments, and permit requirements for the Agency.  The work of this position supports WSDOT's strategic plan through wise management of the roadside as an asset, delivering right-sized projects, supporting multi-modal transportation options, improving environmental conditions, and meeting the expectations of the public for livable communities.

Job Requirements

Balance working with other designers on multiple projects in design, construction, and management phases of roadside, site, and mitigation work.

Terms of Employment

The ideal candidate for this position will have the following:

  • Bachelor or Masters degree in Landscape Architecture or a Bachelor of Science Degree with major in Landscape Architecture required.
  • Familiarity with environmental mitigation practices for successful design and construction.
  • Ability to perform on-site inspections and provide guidance for roadside preservation, restoration, mitigation and plant establishment work on construction sites.
  • Ability to work in a variety of terrains and weather conditions, and at times outside of normal work hours when the situation calls for it.
  • Capable of reading and analyzing plans for contract coherence, completeness, constructability, and accuracy.
  • Ability to balance time requirements and complete various work assignments.
  • Experience as a landscape designer and an interest in natural systems (preferred and desired).
  • WSDA Pesticide License with endorsement categories Q (Aquatic) and OB/OW (Ornament Weed Control) are required within one year, 02 (Public Consultant) or 08 (Public Operator) or equivalent.
  • Certification in Site Erosion and Sediment Control (preferred and desired).
  • ISA Certified Arborist (preferred).
  • Experience in construction contract administration (preferred).
  • Valid Drivers License required.

Entry-level candidates are eligible for an in-training position that offers a career path and ample on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress through the Transportation Planning series with the goal of becoming a Transportation Planning Specialist 2. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Planning Specialist 1 or Transportation Planning Specialist 2 position depending on their qualifications.
