FROM GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS TO ADVOCACY...
Vaughn B. Rinner, FASLA

Allow me to introduce myself.  I relocated this year from Virginia to Seattle, so I am relatively new to the WASLA community.  I have, however, been involved with licensure and advocacy issues for many years, both in Virginia and at the national level.  I attended the ASLA Advocacy Summit this fall on behalf of WASLA, and I am honored to serve as the Chair of the WASLA Advocacy Committee for 2014-2015.  I am asking for your help.

Advocating for the profession of landscape architecture is one of the most important functions of WASLA, as it is the way that we ensure the right to practice for Washington state landscape architects.  In order to reflect this broad role of the committee, the name of the Government Affairs Committee has been changed to Advocacy Committee.

Advocacy includes:

  • Support of landscape architecture licensing
  • Tracking and acting on legislative issues that affect our practice
  • Promoting and enhancing an understanding of the value and scope of our practice among legislators, municipal officials, allied professionals, and the general public

The Advocacy Committee will be working to develop a stronger network to support landscape architectural practice in Washington and to generate a broader understanding of the profession in localities throughout the state. If you are interested in joining the committee to help detail our goals and objectives, or even if you just have ideas, issues, or history you would like to contribute, please let me know.  I welcome your contributions!
