President's Remarks
Laura Thompson

Another congratulations is in order for University of Washington Student, Darin Roselini, for being selected to sit on the ASLA Student Advisory Committee! In his new role, he will bring the student perspective to the table and provide insight on how ASLA can best serve students and emerging professionals. If you happen to see Darin, be sure to give him a crisp high-five!

Over the last few weeks and crossing over into the month of September, WASLA committees have been hard at work planning great events for our membership. The Events Committee is in the midst of Awards Reception planning, which will be held on November 2nd at the Paccar Pavilion Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle. Entries have been received and our jury, made up of professionals from the Arizona Chapter, will begin their selection process this month. The Events Committee is also diving into theme and color palette selection for the 2018 WASLA Conference.

With the help of ASLA and GBCI, WASLA will host a SITES workshop on the 14th of September at GGLO's office in Downtown Seattle. Our Keynote Speaker will be Amy Cragg of GGN who will share her experience working on the SITES pilot project, Theater Commons and Donnelly Gardens. This workshop is open to all and will cover the SITES rating system, the exam, and the registration process for projects. So, whether you know a lot or little about the system, this workshop will have something for you.

Lastly, Spokane professionals and Washington State University landscape architecture students will participate in WASLA's 2nd Shadow Mentor Day on September 28th. Eastern Washington Member at Large, Julia Culp, and I have been working with Steve Austin and Jolie Kaytes of WSU to continue this program for a second year. Our thanks goes out to them and to the local professionals who have dedicated their time to bring in-office experiences to the students of the program.

Pre-Registration is Open Now!

Register early for an evening of celebration and recognition of the outstanding achievements by landscape architects in our state. Join us on November 2nd to celebrate the 2017 WASLA Award Winners!

Meet us at the Paccar Pavilion at Olympic Sculpture Park to view all the submitted projects, congratulate the award winners, and connect with your peers. A full dinner and a complimentary alcoholic beverage are included with registration

New WASLA Newsletter Editor

We would like to thank Patrick Pirtle for stepping in as our WASLA Newsletter Editor since November 2016 - his efforts were priceless in sharing vital news and information with our membership! Patrick is currently transitioning the position to Coreen Schmidt, who will be managing the newsletter beginning in October.

A few words from incoming Editor Coreen Schmidt:

I am excited to be taking over the helm of the WASLA newsletter next month. I have been a WASLA member since 2011, and when I'm not hiking or skiing or otherwise chasing my husband and our (spoiled) dog up a mountain somewhere, I work on urban-design projects ranging from streetscapes and woonerfs to shared-use trails and large-scale urban raingardens at Seattle-based KPG. Working as a landscape architect has given me a wonderful opportunity to help promote the livability and sustainability of our region, and I am looking forward to working with all of you to continue making the newsletter a valuable resource for our professional community!

Newsletter contributors: keep your eyes peeled for a revised content submission process!

Date Set for Spokane Charrette in October

Our NPS/WASLA partnership is holding a second charrette in 2017 - Friday and Saturday, October 27-28 in Spokane. NPS and WASLA volunteers will work with stakeholders, resource experts and community members on concepts for a nature trail in the Latah-Hangman Creek valley on the southwest edge of the city. Flag your calendar!

This effort is sparked by local trail advocates and organized by the Inland Northwest Trails and Conservation Coalition (INTC). Ultimately, the objective is to establish a wildlife conservation corridor and a nine-mile walking trail to connect seven city neighborhoods and a number of public parks in this valley.

The landscape and ecology of the Latah-Hangman valley and its tributary stream to the Spokane River are millennia old, and has been inhabited for thousands of years on account of the abundant salmon fishery at Spokane Falls. A continuing conservation effort and a linked walking trail in this historic place seems to be what our century demands: a connecting place for neighbors and nature.

Please contact Don Benson ([email protected] or 206-297-1259) if you are interested in participating and/or have questions.

ACE Mentorship - Call for Volunteers

All, it's that time of the year again when we start to assemble our ACE Mentoring teams for the upcoming year. For those of you who need a refresher on the program, attached are a couple of flyers that outline the program. The Seattle Affiliate continues to grow, make changes and continually improve. Last year was a huge success, with our expansion into the South Sound bringing on new teams in Tacoma and Auburn.  A big thanks to all of you who volunteered last year to mentor, you are what makes the program so successfully and impacts the lives of the students so much.

At this point I'm asking for volunteers to sign up for this year's program, and once again there is a high demand for good mentors. Registration will once again be on-line on the ACE Mentor website, I have included the link below to get you to the registration page and information to get registered. The registration process has changed slightly to include a short orientation, which takes the place of the (rather dry) orientation we typically do in October. The registration also includes preferences for night of the week to volunteer and whether you prefer to be on a team close to your work or home. There is also a spot to choose your preference on what you're volunteering for, you can pick more than one box if you'd like to volunteer for more than just mentoring. This is a spot where people who want to lead a team can note that preference, we'd love to have our returning team leaders again but also want to know who is interested in leading teams in the future. Again, the ACE program is improving things each year and I think the new registration process will help.

The Living Room Project
Friday, September 15 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

As the place where life happens, the living room is a safe space where social functions play out that are central to the performance of human identity. In a city where space is at a premium, the living room is disappearing for not-housed and housed alike. Those living outside often find themselves without a place to exist during waking hours, with emergency shelter necessarily focusing on overnight accommodations. As such, there are precious few moments for social intimacy in a secure space where they are explicitly welcome. Those living inside also increasingly lack this kind of space, with market forces replacing private living rooms with for-rent amenity spaces and external spaces of consumption. This crisis of the Living Room offers a prompt for the questions this project explores.

With support from the City of Seattle Office of Arts and Culture and 4Culture, and in partnership with Facing Homelessness, The Living Room Project will stage a large outdoor living room installation in an alley that shares frontage with a number of non-profit organizations. The Living Room will be a day long place of creative engagement, casual interaction, food, and quite simply being.

If you are interested in engaging with people living inside and outside, please see this as an opportunity to connect with someone in the space of a public living room. We look forward to having you over!

Refreshments included
