Festival Streets—Plazas in the Right-of-Way

Festival streets create a great space for community gatherings. Designed to serve typical street functions while also meeting the objectives of an event venue, there are a number of special considerations for their design. This session will cover the development and design of two recently completed projects, discuss what type of streets make good festival streets, and examine design considerations for safe, functional, and dynamic festival streets.

Speaker Bio: Curtis LaPierre, Senior Project Manager, Otak, Inc.

Curtis LaPierre is a landscape architect and senior project manager with Otak, an ENR Top 500 award-winning internationally recognized planning and design firm. Curtis has more than 30 years of experience in the design of transportation facilities including roadways, main streets, light rail and BRT stations, and festival streets including Seattle’s first festival street, Roberto Maestas. He is currently completing Seattle’s Georgetown Festival Street and consulting on several other festival streets on the boards at Otak.
