Committee Description

The Student and Emerging Professional Committee (SEP) is dedicated to improving student achievement in landscape architectural studies and providing new professionals with resources and networking opportunities. Strengthening the community of young and entry-level landscape architects serves to increase retention in the field, promote resource-sharing, and build professional relationships. WASLA awards scholarships each year to deserving Landscape Architecture Students that are active members of WASLA, and are administered by the WASLA Board of Directors. Student Scholarship Opportunities for WASLA Members:

Academic Scholarship – This scholarship is for academic purposes and totals $3,000 towards the awardee’s academic costs. This scholarship is open students who are currently enrolled in a University’s landscape architecture program in Washington State. You must be a student member of ASLA and WASLA to be considered for this award.

We are currently administering the academic scholarship for the year 2019-2020. You must be entering your final year of study for the academic year of 2019-2020, either in a baccalaureate or master’s program, to be considered for winning this award.

Schedule for applying for Academic Scholarship:

                12 November 2018 – Academic Scholarship applications open

                8 February 2018 – Academic Scholarship applications due

                8 March 2018 – Academic Scholarship winner is notified

                Fall 2019 – Funds released to scholarship winner’s school

Academic Scholarship will be available for download in Fall 2019

Travel Scholarship – This scholarship is awarded to one student to attend the 2019 ASLA Conference and Expo in San Diego, CA in November 2019. This scholarship is open to students who are enrolled in a University’s landscape architecture program in Washington State for the academic year of 2019-2020. You must be a student member of ASLA and WASLA to be considered for this award. We will be administering the travel scholarship for the 2019 year.

Schedule for applying for the Travel Scholarship:

                25 March 2019 – Travel Scholarship applications open

                15 May 2019 – Travel Scholarship applications due

                14 June 2019 – Travel Scholarship winner is notified

15-18 November 2019 – ASLA Conference & Expo in San Diego, CA

Application will be added to website for download on 25 March 2019.

How You Can Get Involved

Whether you are a college student, an emerging professional, or a seasoned professional looking to give back, there are many ways to get involved with the SEP:

  • Join the Emerging Professionals listserv to receive announcements about resources and upcoming events. 
  • Sign up to become a student mentor. Find the email address above for your local contact. 
  • Send us information on scholarships, internships or other opportunities for students and emerging professionals
  • Become a member of the Student and Emerging Professional Committee. All interested professionals are welcome to participate and contribute! A larger committee base will allow us to provide more services to students and emerging professionals in Washington State.
