Community, Industry & Place-based Sea Level Rise Adaptation: Vision Plan for the Duwamish ValleyLandscape Architect: Walker Macy The Duwamish Valley, including the South Park and Georgetown neighborhoods, is a close-knit and diverse community bound together by intimate social and cultural ties. A mix of industrial and residential areas, it is centered around the Duwamish River, and it is the area most vulnerable to sea level rise (SLR)-related coastal flooding in Seattle. With ongoing global climate change, existing flooding issues and other climate hazards in the Duwamish Valley will worsen. The team worked with these historically-underserved local communities and the City of Seattle to co-create a vision and strategy for adaptation to sea level rise on the shoreline of the Duwamish River estuary. The planner synthesized priorities of local residential and industrial communities into an initial vision and strategy for publicly led investment in long-term SLR flooding adaptation that provides multiple benefits, including public access, habitat, and community spaces. A central aspect of this vision and strategy is a focus on anti-displacement and creating opportunities for residents and businesses to prosper in place. |
