President's Remarks

Dear WASLA Members and Readers,

Happy World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM)! Whether it was by design or not, April really is the perfect month to celebrate Landscape Architecture. April is when we feel like we emerge from the depths of winter and go outdoors again, when cherry blossoms hit their peak bloom, when last year’s bulbs grow into flowers, and when every invasive plant pops out of the ground to remind us of the importance of good maintenance. National ASLA has a multitude of ways you can get involved in the spirit of the WLAM season, either through social media posts or getting some extra professional development hours, I encourage you to visit their page here.

I also want to give a shout-out to all the fantastic work our WASLA committees have been doing so far leading up to WLAM. The Student and Emerging Professionals Committee did an excellent job organizing and running Trivia Night. The Conference Committee has been putting together some exciting ideas. The Communications Committee has been actively engaging our members on LinkedIn and Instagram. And the new Climate Action Committee has hit the ground running and is already planning its first webinar that will be a part of a climate-focused webinar series. More information to follow as that develops more! Thank you all to the dedicated volunteers on each of those committees.

It would not be a newsletter if it did not also include a plug for volunteering. Soon a call for members to run for this year’s open WASLA Board of Directors positions will go out. If you want to help how WASLA runs things or change how it runs things, consider running for an open position this year. Having new perspectives and members be a part of the board keeps us current, and I hope to see a lot of new names on the ballot this year. You can reach out to any of the board members, and they would be happy to answer any questions you have about their position.

Lastly, I am looking forward to our WASLA State Awards on the 20th of this month and seeing some of you there to celebrate all the inspiring work done by our members!

Worldly,

Nick Zurlini

   WASLA President

Recognition, Reconciliation, Reparation

Landscape architecture and environmental planning is adapting to the roles the places co-created with communities can play in redistributing power, information, and resources required to build human capacity with vulnerable populations. Sharing history, research, and current work, this lecture will present challenges and opportunities associated with landscape processes for recognizing environmental injustice, reconciling with harmed communities, and the pursuit of reparative work.

Kofi Boone, FASLA is a Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Professor and University Faculty Scholar at NC State University. Kofi is a Detroit native and a graduate of the University of Michigan. His work is in the overlap between landscape architecture and environmental justice with specializations in democratic design and interpreting cultural landscapes. He is the winner of student and professional ASLA awards including the Jot D. Carpenter Teaching Medal. He is Immediate Past President of the Landscape Architecture Foundation.

ESSAY PROMPT

Imagine you are a keynote speaker at the 2040 ASLA Conference where the theme is the Climate Action Plan (CAP). What is the topic of your presentation? How would your work impact the success of the goals and initiatives of the CAP? (Word limit: 500 words)

Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) 2023 Challenge Competition

For the 14th annual HALS Challenge competition, the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) invites you to document Working Landscapes. Historic “working” or “productive” landscapes may be agricultural or industrial and unique or traditional. Some topical working landscapes convey water for irrigation or provide flood control. Please focus your HALS report on the landscape as a whole and not on a building or structure alone. For this theme, the HAER History Guidelines may be helpful along with HALS History Guidelines.  For more information visit the link below.  If you have any questions, please email Duane Dietz at [email protected]

Deadline to submit short format histories: July 31, 2023

Awards will be presented: October 27-30, 2023, during the ASLA Conference on Landscape Architecture in Minneapolis
