I had a progressive English teacher once in high school that had us writing stories using vocab words, analyzing Blade Runner, acting out murder plays, and, his finest work, having us students act as teacher for a day. We had to take over the whole class period and teach a lesson plan about something we had covered in the class. This was uncomfortable for most, terrifying for some, and an overall brilliant way to get all to do their homework. My teacher knew the rich benefits of the protégé effect: how one learns from teaching others. Having to teach our classmates about the concepts in the stories we read suddenly activated different areas of our brains. We turned what we learned into a language that we teenagers spoke, making it more real and relatable. It made the course material cement in my mind, which still remains a dozen years later.

Save the Date: Park(ing) Day is Friday 9/16: Sponsors Needed!
INSPIRE: Citizens across WA are encouraged to celebrate PARK(ing) Day by turning an ordinary parking space into a park for a day! To take part in the annual international event, contact your local DOT or municipality for participation guidelines for your area. For inspiration, check out photos from last year's event.
For 2016, Seattle PARK(ing) Day is changing to PARK(ing) Day Plus + and will extend over two days, Friday 9/16 and Saturday 9/17. PARK(ing) Day Plus + will feature pocket parks as well as tactical urbanism projects such as bicycle lanes, crosswalks and sidewalks.

Calling All Mentors for the University of Washington!
 I am sending out the Call for Mentors early this year in the hope of building a team of 40-50 mentors for the upcoming school year at University of Washington. As always, we need your help to get started early and make this the most rewarding year yet for the mentorship program. The school year starts at the beginning of October and runs through early June.
Participation is easy. Please list your information below and send it back to me at [email protected]. Then the student representatives and I will pair you with a student by late September/early October and off you go!

Call for Entries for the 2016 WASLA Professional Awards
Beginning this year, the WASLA Professional Awards will now be held annually. The Awards Committee aligned the submittal requirements with ASLA national's requirements, and eliminated the PowerPoint and Large Board deliverables. Categories were also adjusted to align with the chapter's work. It is easier than ever to submit your project!

ASLA Wins National Park Service Director's Partnership Award for Excellent Partnership
American Society of Landscape Architects has won a "Director's Partnership Award," one of the nineteen awards made by National Park Service Director Jarvis for 2016. This honorary award recognizes nationally significant partnership accomplishments including establishing major partnership programs and cumulative partnership achievements.

June 27, 1953- August 5, 2016
J.B. Jackson said that he admired landscape architects for their naïve optimism. There was nothing naïve about Carolyn. She recently retired to Asheville, NC after a 41 year career of public service, most recently as the Recreation Special Uses Program Manager for the U.S.D.A. Forest Service.

Ken Struckmeyer Student Scholarship Endowment Fund
After 40+ years of service to Washington State University and his students, Ken Struckmeyer has retired. His jovial and caring presence on campus is greatly missed. To honor Ken's career as professor, coach, mentor, and colleague; an endowment has been established in his name, the Ken Struckmeyer Student Scholarship Endowment Fund. The endowment is awarded to students who are aspiring declared majors in landscape architecture.

UW Landscape Architecture Internship/ Practicum Portal
UWLA PAC, Internship + Research Committee
The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.
Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students.
