President's Remarks

Hello WASLA Members,

As summer winds down, we’re gearing up to finish strong with WASLA Field Day: Downtown Seattle just around the corner on September 12th. If you haven’t already, please be sure to register and select your tours and sessions so we can finalize the remaining details and ensure a smooth, inspiring day for everyone.

We’re excited to reconnect in person and celebrate all the incredible work that has come to life along the Seattle Waterfront. From Overlook Walk to Pier 58 and beyond, this transformation is something truly special—and we’ll also get a glimpse into the future planning efforts that are guiding Seattle toward a more people and environmentally-focused future.

On another note, the WASLA Board recently met to update our strategic plan, and I want to thank everyone who responded to our recent survey. Your input and thoughtful comments were incredibly helpful and are being directly applied to the goals we’re setting for the chapter. One key area we’re exploring is licensure costs—and how we might help reduce or support them moving forward. We’re also working on new ideas to increase engagement and events across the state, and we hope to share more in the coming months.

Several of us will also be attending the National ASLA Conference in New Orleans, where we’ll be connecting with other chapters and learning how others across the country are tackling shared challenges and advancing the profession.

Finally, we’ll soon be introducing the new WASLA Board of Directors, and I look forward to working with them as we bring our updated strategic plan to life.

Wishing everyone a great end to summer—and I hope to see many of you at Field Day!

 Mike Faulkner

   WASLA President

Students and Emerging Professionals

Clelie Fielding, a University of Washington graduate student, recently completed her joint Master of Landscape Architecture/Master of Urban Planning thesis, Temporary Tactics for Radical Shade:  Catalyzing Rapid Interventions for Extreme Urban Heat in Seattle.

Clelie's compelling research and design framework/approaches would be a wonderful resource for practicing landscape architects, as our Washington (and the rest of the world’s) summers become increasingly hotter.

Join Northwest Playground for a virtual CEU Accreditation Course: THE DECINE OF OUTDOOR PLAY - AND THE RISE IN SENSORY ISSUES

DATE: September 18th
TIME: 1:00 pm PST

As we continue to decrease children’s time and space to move and play outdoors, we are seeing a simultaneous rise in the number of children that are presenting with sensory and motor deficits. At the same time, classroom teachers are observing more and more children having trouble with attention, falling out of their seats in school, increased clumsiness, and even aggressiveness with games like tag on the playground.

So, how can we reverse this alarming trend of sensory and motor issues in children? How can we ensure that children are fully engaging their body, mind, and all of their senses?

Using the same philosophy that lies at the heart of her popular TimberNook program—that nature is the ultimate sensory experience, and that psychological and physical health improves for children when they spend time outside on a regular basis—Angela Hanscom offers several strategies to help children thrive in outdoor environments using a therapeutic approach to nature play.

Speaker: Angela Hanscom, TimberNook
