President's Remarks

In the spirit of the holiday season, I thought I would share with you my family's holiday traditions. Each year I am lucky enough to spend the holidays with my family here in Spokane. Christmas Eve is spent gathered around a festive table topped with a huge roast, all the fixings, and mama's Piggy-Pudding pie. The table is loud with multiple conversations happening all at once, youngsters singing over the jibber-jabber of "adult-talk," and silverware clinging and clanging trying to make its way through the feast. As dinner wraps up and everyone winds down ("wine" down might be more appropriate!) we pop in the Claymation Christmas DVD and watch all of our favorite holiday songs come to life. Before the evening festivities are over, our tradition is to open one present, carefully labeled, "Open X-Mas Eve." Although we know exactly what will be under the seasonal wrapping paper (pajamas), it still brings me so much joy to sneak one present from under the tree before Christmas morning officially arrives. The pajamas, of course, are put on display the very next morning as we all arrive back at my parents' house adorned with our most recent gift.

Even though the house is loud, my nieces and nephews may throw a fit, and I may leave my parents' house utterly exhausted from sensory overload, I also leave completely satisfied and so grateful that I have this wild and crazy family to call my own. It is during this time of the year where I am reminded how much I truly have to be thankful for. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful holiday season! I hope that each and every one of you has the opportunity to spend the holidays with loved ones, whether that be your family, your friends, or friends who feel like family! And may you wrap up the holidays feeling warm, loved, satisfied, and reinvigorated for the New Year!

2018 WASLA Annual Conference to be a Rousing Event!

As the year comes to a close, the Events Committee would like to thank everyone who attended, volunteered for, participated in, worked toward and supported 2017 programs. This year's Annual Conference and Awards Competition & Reception would not have been successful without you. These events raise crucial funds for member services and programs that the Chapter offers throughout the year. Thank you for your contributions!

We are looking forward to offering more outstanding programs in 2018. The Annual Conference will be held March 16 at Motif Seattle. Registration is open, with best pricing available through January 12. We are happy to offer two levels of discounted registration fees for students.

The Conference boasts a rousing program featuring four concurrent tracks of presentations throughout the day, general sessions, two receptions, meals, and an exhibitor hall. Conference sponsorships, booths and exhibitor tables are on sale now, quantities will be limited.

Get in the Spirit at the Upcoming Holiday Events!

Bring your holiday cheer to one or both of the upcoming holiday events to celebrate another year with your friends and peers! Join us at the PLS Light Lounge with Maglin and Pacific Lighting Systems for the WASLA Holiday Happy Hour on December 7th or come down to Tacoma the following week for the annual Mingle 'n Jingle with Bruce Dees & Associates on December 14th. Twenty-fifth Annual Shadow Mentor Day - Pass On Your Expertise!

The University of Oregon ASLA Student Chapter is pleased to host the Twenty-fifth annual Shadow Mentor Day on Friday, February 2, 2018. For one day, students experience the working world of landscape architecture by spending a day with a professional. A learning experience for students and practicing landscape architects alike, this event has always been a great success made possible by the support of professionals like you. In recognition of your contribution to the landscape architecture community, we would like to invite you to participate in this year's event.

Please let us know if you are able to participate by filling out the information in the survey below by Friday, January 5th. Information about your practice, including areas of concentration or current projects, will be helpful for students when they request a mentor. The information you provide about your firm will help us better pair students and professionals with similar goals and interests. If your firm has any special instructions, please feel free to include them in your response.

Thank you for your participation-without you, this event would not be possible. To participate this year, please fill out the online ASLA Shadow Mentor Day 2018 RSVP Form.

The University of Oregon ASLA Student Chapter will follow up in mid-January to provide further details, including student assignments. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact the University of Oregon ASLA Student Chapter if you have any questions or comments.

OUT in FRONT: Landscape Leading -
Call for Entries

The Landscape Architecture Professional Advisory Council and the University of Washington Department of Landscape Architecture are sponsoring an exhibit of emerging landscape architectural projects by northwest practitioners. OUT/in/FRONT: Landscape Leading is open to all projects, interventions, or proposals in which the work of landscape architects plays a prime role (contractual or not) in shaping the built environment.

This exhibit is a bi-annual event to inspire students and professionals and illustrate the breadth of work taking place in the profession. The exhibit will be held at Gould Court for two weeks, after which the participating boards will be displayed at other universities in the Pacific Northwest.

Entry Fees: $150 per board ($50 for non-profits and students)

When: January 15-28, 2018
Where: UW Gould Hall Court

Opening Reception: January 16, 2018

Lecture with Chris Reed, Founding Director of Stoss Landscape Urbanism

Space.city presents Chris Reed, Founding Director of Stoss Landscape Urbanism. He is recognized internationally as a leading voice in the transformation of landscapes and cities. His work collectively includes urban revitalization initiatives, climate resilience efforts, adaptations of infrastructure and former industrial sites, and the design of vibrant public spaces that cultivate a diversity of social uses and cultural traditions. Reed is the co-editor of Projective Ecologies, a recipient of the 2012 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in Landscape Architecture, a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the 2017 winner of the Rome Prize. He is currently Co-Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture in Urban Design Program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
