President's Remarks

Dear WASLA Members and Readers,

Happy holidays! I hope you all are making the best of the season with friends and family. As the year draws to a close, I always find myself in a reflective spirit. For one, it is hard to believe that I have been writing newsletters for a year straight! It is also hard to believe that just one year ago (in the 2022 December newsletter no less) I introduced the idea of a WASLA Climate Action Committee, and in just one year how many major contributions they have made to our chapter and ASLA.

Our Climate Action Committee started by hosting a statewide webinar that dove into ASLA’s Climate Action Plan, making it more digestible for our members. Then, they created a Climate Action Plan Cheat Sheet, a valuable tool for understanding the extensive ASLA Climate Action Plan. The Cheat Sheet is now a resource being used at a national level. They presented at the WASLA Annual Conference, educating attendees about local climate ordinances and ways to reduce embodied carbon in projects. On top of all these accomplishments, the CAC has compiled a Washington Climate Action Resource List. This extensive list details tools, metrics, white papers, institutions, and more that are local to Washington state and the greater Pacific Northwest which can help our members apply the goals of the Climate Action Plan to their work. You can access this growing resource list on our website under ‘Get Involved’ and ‘Climate Action’ or by clicking here.

In more exciting news, we have released our 2024 Chapter Sponsorship Package! All the amazing work our members do and events they participate in could not happen without our stellar sponsors. If you have been a WASLA sponsor, thank you immensely for supporting our organization, the work we do, and the initiatives we push. I hope you will support us again for the coming year. If you are thinking about becoming a sponsor, I hope that you will reach out to us with any questions you may have. Sponsorship comes in many forms, whether it means supporting WASLA as a whole or sponsoring one student to attend the National Conference, there are many valuable ways to contribute and give back to our landscape architecture community. You can see our 2024 Sponsorship Package here.

Additionally, our call for submissions to the WASLA Annual Awards will be going out early January. Start thinking about the projects your proud of and deserve to be recognized; I know the members in our state are producing amazing, award-worthy work!

Finally, as a volunteer myself, I know it can a challenge to find time to serve on a committee, but I hope that everything the Climate Action Committee has done sparks some excitement in all of you reading. Look at how much progress has been made with a few passionate people! If you want to make a difference in our practices, our communities, and our region, please reach out to [email protected] with your interest in being member on any of our great committees.

Yearly,

Nick Zurlini

Call for Reviewers: UWASLA Winter Quarter Portfolios

UWASLA is hosting a new series of winter and spring portfolio review sessions, and we would love to have you there! Your expertise and insights will play a crucial role in helping these students prepare for job opportunities and internships.

There will be 2 time periods available to better-fit people’s schedules:

Jan 10, 2024 6:00 PM PST

Jan 17, 2024 6:00 PM PST

It will be 100% online through Miro and zoom. Kiera and I will be at both panels as facilitators during the event. We hope to run it like a final review, but with more focus on portfolio content, formatting, and readiness for internship and job applications.

As a reviewer, you will be assigned specific time slots to review student portfolios on our dedicated Miro board. Your feedback and guidance will contribute significantly to the development of these emerging talents.

Next Steps:

If you are available and willing to participate, please confirm your availability through this link by December 31st! Upon confirmation, we will provide you with additional details, including the Miro board access link and guidelines for the review process. Your participation is highly valued, and we believe your insights will greatly benefit the students in their professional development.

Thank you for considering our invitation. We look forward to your positive response.

Best,
Kiera and Eve
