President's Remarks

Laura Thompson

Here we are in June, half way through the calendar year already, and things just aren't slowing down. I know that my personal schedule it keeping me plenty busy on top of my work schedule and WASLA's schedule is filling up fast, too! Keep your eyes peeled for more information regarding the following events, programs, and tasks.

2017-2018 WASLA Elections: With every new year comes a new opportunity for leadership and visioning for our chapter. This year's voting will begin the week of June 19th, and close the week of July 17th. Ballots will be sent out to your email inboxes soon.

WSU Shadow Mentor Day: This will be the second year that WASLA will be partnering with WSU for the Shadow Mentor Day program. For this program, WSU students will be paired up with Spokane professionals based on their interest within the profession. The day will begin with a meet and greet lunch, and then the students will spend a half-day with their assigned professional mentor. After spending the day on the job site, or getting a quick AutoCAD lesson, or maybe even having the opportunity to brainstorm ideas on trash paper together, after which everyone convenes at a local restaurant for a social event. This provides a great opportunity for students to network with professionals outside of the office and classroom. We are hoping to plan this event in late September. Informational emails about this event will be sent out to Spokane professionals in the coming weeks!

PARK(ing) Day: This year's PARK(ing) Day falls on Friday September 15th!

ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo: This year's meeting and expo will be held in the bustling urban center of Los Angeles from October 20th through the 23rd. Not only is the national meeting a great place to earn your professional development hours (in which you can earn up to 21 PDH's), but it's a great event to mingle with like-minded individuals. This year's conference has 16 field sessions offered where you can explore the host city while also learning about the sites in which you visit. There will be several receptions available to attend, too, if you are hoping to catch up and meet people in a more social environment, such as the Alumni Tailgate Party, or the PPN Reception, or one of my favorites, the Land8 Happy Hour. Whichever path you choose, I guarantee that you will return home from your trip having made wonderful connections and feeling energized about the profession. If you can fit this into your schedule, I would highly recommend that you make the trip!
