Hello WASLA Members,
Summer has arrived in the Pacific Northwest, and hopefully you’re finding time to get outside, enjoy the long days, and take in some of the energy around the region. With the World Cup bringing global attention to Seattle and Washington State, it has been exciting to see our public spaces step into the spotlight. From Downtown Seattle to fan zones across the Puget Sound, these gathering places remind us how thoughtful planning, design, and stewardship bring people and communities together.
Later this summer, we’re looking ahead to WASLA Field Day on Friday, August 14, at the University of Washington. We’re excited to explore the campus and hear more about the ongoing work building on its rich planning legacy while creating forward-thinking, ecologically sound spaces that highlight the natural beauty of the region. Tour proposals are due this Friday, June 26, and we encourage you to submit an idea or help spread the word.
We are also kicking off elections for the 2026-27 WASLA Board of Directors. Open positions include Trustee, Treasurer, Secretary, Eastern Washington Member-at-Large, Western Washington Member-at-Large, and Statewide Member-at-Large. If you’ve been thinking about getting involved, this is a great opportunity to bring your perspective, support the profession, and help shape the future of WASLA. Candidate materials are due Friday, July 3rd.
Finally, it was great to see Washington voices represented in the June issue of Landscape Architecture Magazine. Steve Austin examines the disconnect between the profession’s climate goals and the education and accreditation structures needed to support them. Daniel Winterbottom, FASLA, was also featured in a piece reflecting on the growing role of therapeutic landscapes and his long-standing leadership in that field. Both pieces are a reminder of the depth of expertise here in Washington and the ways our colleagues continue to shape national conversations.

The University of Washington campus offers one of the region’s most memorable settings to experience the relationship between landscape, architecture, and the city. From the legacy of the 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition and the Olmsted Brothers planning framework to the evolving campus today, UW reflects a layered landscape shaped by formal vistas, historic spaces, iconic views, promenades, and contemporary investments in ecology, mobility, and the public realm.
*LACES Credit will be offered for all walking tours and the keynote presentation pending approval.

2026 ASLA National Student Awards
|
WASLA congratulates the students recognized through the 2026 ASLA National Student Awards program. These awards celebrate outstanding student achievement and design excellence, providing an opportunity for emerging landscape architects to present their work before a jury of practicing professionals from across Washington State.
This year's juries included Sarah Maas, Erin Kerney, Ana Cristina Garcia, Noriko Marshall, Morteza Behrooz, Michael Lipko, and Sheryl Fishel, who generously volunteered their time and expertise to support the next generation of landscape architects. We thank them for their time and thoughtful engagement with the students.
