President's Remarks

Dear WASLA Members and Readers,

On the Board of Directors, we are always thinking about the next big thing. Although we are still half a year away from it, the next big thing is our WASLA Annual Awards for 2024. Within the next two months we will send out our call for submittals, but in the meantime, I would encourage you all to think about the amazing work you or your firm has done and make sure you have quality project photos to show off that amazing work (hopefully you can take advantage of the all the great fall color!). Even though great projects are the ones that win awards, it takes a great image to convey its impact.

An important yet unseen part of our Annual Awards are the juries who review all the submissions. For our upcoming awards, we will be exchanging juries with members from the Potomac Chapter of the ASLA, which is located in and around Washington DC. This exchange means that our members will have the opportunity to review all the fantastic work being done by the firms in the Potomac Chapter. Serving on the Annual Awards jury is, in my opinion, one of the most exciting ways you can volunteer with WASLA, as you get an inspiring inside look at how landscape architecture is practiced in another part of the country. The jury also needs to have a diverse representation of individuals. Whether that diversity comes in the form of work experience, age, identity, or culture, we need all types of people to serve to ensure we give well rounded feedback. If the prospect of being on our Annual Awards jury excites you (and it should) please email [email protected] and we will get you on board.

Unrelated to the Awards, but related to volunteering, we have a new member taking on our Western Member-at-Large position. We would like to thank and extend our appreciation to Michelle Whitfield for her time on the board, yet due to extenuating circumstances, she no longer has the ability to serve. However, I am excited to announce our new Western Member-at-Large, Rhiannon Neuville! After serving on the University of Washington’s Professional Advisory Committee for the past several years and receiving the 2023 Outstanding Emerging Professional Award, we are certain that she will fit right in and excel at her new role. Welcome Rhiannon!

For all our members, WASLA is incredibly thankful for any amount of time you are willing and able to dedicate to volunteering. Whether your volunteer time is spent in an hour reviewing a student’s portfolio, in a position on a committee, or even in attending one of our events, we appreciate your participation in this amazing community that we cultivate together.

Thankfully,

Nick Zurlini

Save Funding for Green Infrastructure

The U.S. House of Representatives has proposed to cut the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) from last year's $1.64 billion down to $535 million.

This would be a 67 percent reduction for one of the most-accessed federal funding sources that landscape architects to plan and design water infrastructure projects.

Write your legislators today and urge them to oppose funding cuts to the Clean Water State Revolving Fund!
