Dear WASLA Members and Readers,
The changing of the seasons is a wonderful time, and the transition to fall is one of my favorites. The air feels crisper, the leaves become brilliant colors, and “pumpkin spice” returns as a flavor to every coffee shop.
Fall also happens to be conference season! We just held our Annual WASLA Conference on September 15th and I am incredibly happy with how the event turned out. We had over 250 attendees who participated in a series of inspiring sessions, informative workshops, active walking tours, and collaborative conversations with all our great conference sponsors. Thank you to all our members who attended and to all our sponsors who supported such a successful event. I’m already looking forward to next year!
We always want to improve and expand upon our state conference, so if you attended, I hope you can take a few minutes out of your day to fill out our post-conference survey (check your email for the link!) We appreciate and consider any and all feedback.
September is also proving to be an exciting time in Seattle as more traction is being gained both locally and nationally on the Lid I-5 initiative. It is an exciting prospect that will directly and positively impact our profession and urban environment. Below you can read about more ways to get involved with Lid I-5 in a blurb from the organization's co-chair, Scott Bonjukian, below.

Thank you for a great conference! We loved participating with you in the rich conversations, networking, and vendor visits. This year we were excited to introduce new session formats, such as walking tours and workshops, and collaborate within a more academic venue. We hope that you found value in these new additions to the conference.

Welcome New Board Members!

Welcome to our new board members and a gracious thank you to Marieke Lacasse, Maureen Colazzi, and Joshua Tripp for the excellent work they have put in over the years to support WASLA.

The Lid I-5 project in Seattle gained official support from the City Council on September 5. The Council passed a resolution, which is a statement of legislative policy or intent, to direct departments to advance planning for the project and to coordinate with the Washington State Department of Transportation. This comes as WSDOT prepares for a statewide I-5 master planning effort, studies earthquake vulnerabilities in Seattle, and studies ramp configurations in Seattle.
In the meantime, a few miles north, an offshoot of the Downtown campaign has emerged in the idea for a lid between the University District and Wallingford. The U District Partnership is a local civic and commerce organization that is spearheading the effort. At the University of Washington, landscape architecture professor Nancy Rottle is leading a studio class during the fall quarter looking at the same area between NE 45th and 50th Streets.
The U District Partnership and UW are jointly hosting a lid design charrette on Thursday, November 9, 5:30 PM. Location TBD. They are looking for 5-10 design professionals to volunteer as "table captains" and help facilitate conversations on conceptual lid designs with the students and other participants from the general public. ASLA Seeks Green Infrastructure Project Examples and Water Experts

ASLA's Government Affairs team needs your assistance identifying green infrastructure projects in Washington designed by an ASLA member or other landscape architects.
As ASLA works to ensure that water-related policies continue to benefit the profession, we need to hear about landscape architects working on water projects, research, and other resources. Help Add Hedera Helix to WA Prohibited Plant Sales List
|
The invasive plant species, Hedera helix is still being sold in many Washington State nurseries.
A petition has been filed to add the four cultivars of Hedera helix that are currently listed on Washington state's noxious weed list, but are not listed on WA's prohibited plants and seeds list, to be banned for sale. If you are interested in joining the lobbying effort to add destructive invasive plant species, like Hedera helix, to WA State's do not sell list, please contact Kristi Park for more information.

Nason Ridge Community Forest Workshop
Call for Volunteers

The Nason Ridge Community Forest is 3714 acres and located near Plain, WA west of Leavenworth in the Central Cascades. The workshop will take place over 1.5 days starting on Friday afternoon(October 20) and continuing on Saturday(October 21) all day. Food and lodging are being arranged. It is being sponsored by the Chelan County Department of Natural Resources, the National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Community Assistance Program (NPS-RTCA) and WASLA.
The workshop (charrette) involves the placement of trails, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, design and placement of trailheads and interpretation/educational opportunities with active forest management and ecosystem conservation components. The workshop will involve brainstorming with local community members and will also include two teams led by landscape architects with participation(we hope) from students from both state universities. One team will focus on interpretation/education and the other on design components (trailheads, connectivity etc.).
