President's Remarks

Duane Dietz

The heat of summer has paused long enough for the deer and fawns in my crispy dry meadow to jump around with a bit of joy.  The blackberries have ripened all at once and the grocery store is out of pie crusts (fyi, I have little success in making good pastry).  At some point, I’ll start hearing about the unlocked cars getting filled with zucchinis.  Rural life in isolation has been an eye-opener - seeing the micro cycles of life, the lime green sticks of praying mantis in the yellowed grass, and the clumsiness of raven chicks as they fledge. It has also been nice to slowly seeing my neighbors and friends again.  The next step is for all of us landscape architects to get together again.  So, behind the scenes, the WASLA board and volunteers have been working hard on the Spokane Conference to make the October 8th event a success.  Everyone here is aware of the ever-evolving COVID situation.   As we get closer to the conference date, we hope for clear guidance from the State and the Convention Center as to what precautions that will be needed safely to attend the in-person event.  The registration info has been emailed to all the members, check it out.  If you have questions, feel free to contact [email protected] and they will route your query asap.

As always, WASLA needs volunteers, so check our website at www.wasla.org and go to the “Get Involved” pull down menu and click on each of the committees to see what they do and how you can get involved.

And a big thank you to our sponsors!  All of us are looking forward to seeing you in Spokane!

Sincerely,

Duane Dietz
WASLA President

WASLA/NPS-RTCA Partnership Update

The WASLA/National Park Service Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program(NPS-RTCA) partnership has been active since the late 1990's. This has led to over 15 successful charrettes benefitttng communities across the State of Washington. This partnership has also served as a model for similar charrettes at locations throughout the U.S. and led to an agreement between NPS and ASLA National extending the partnership nationally. Although COVID 19 issues have temporarily slowed down charrette activities, WASLA and NPS-RTCA are in preliminary discussion stages for another charrette, perhaps as soon as next Spring.

Our longtime contact at NPS-RTCA, Alex(Alexandra) Stone has since retired and I wanted to give an enormous shout out for her extraordinary efforts in working with me and the Chapter to bring about the successes we have had. Our new very capable NPS liaison will be Susan Rosebrough.

Stay tuned for future updates  Hope everyone is doing well.

Don Benson, ASLA, AICP

Infusing Nature into the Everyday Spaces of Childhood - 1.0 PDH (LA CES/HSW)

August 25, 1:00 PM ET
Description:

Hosted by the Children's Outdoor Environments PPN

Research has found that children’s exposure to nature is beneficial to their academic, social, psychological, cognitive, and physical health. Explore evidence-based design best practices for outdoor play environments and trails that intentionally reconnect children with nature to support family fun, active lifestyles, and unique opportunities for learning. Case examples of playground naturalization and playful pathways will demonstrate innovative solutions to encourage multigenerational play and offer extended play value to visitors. A variety of tools and resources will be shared to assist with the planning and design process of creating innovative destinations that connect communities, encourage health promotion through play, and respond to our intuitive desire to engage with nature.

Please contact Melissa if you have any questions at 202-216-2323 or [email protected]
