President's Remarks

Duane Dietz

Season’s Greetings, and best wishes for us all in 2021. Below, from my landscape architecture ephemera collection, is a hand-engraved, painted Christmas card by landscape architect Burton Ashburton Tripp (1887-1955).

Raised in South Boston, Ashburton would graduate from Harvard University in 1912 and worked briefly for the Olmsted Brothers before becoming the landscape architect of the Panama Canal (1913-1916).  He moved to Cleveland, opened an office, and became best known in ASLA for his designs of the Hebrew, Slovak and Italian Gardens at the Cleveland Cultural Gardens. With the onset of the Depression, he worked for the CCC in a variety of positions before becoming Chief of Landscape Design for the US War Department on the building of The Pentagon (1940-1943).  At the conclusion of construction, Tripp formed the Society of the Pentagon “whose membership consisted of those who had made important contributions to the successful erection of that building.” He then finished his career with the State Department working on the design and oversees supervision of a number of US embassies.  All the while, Ashburton published illustrative maps and an annual Christmas card. His maps and three of his holiday cards are in the Smithsonian collection.

Sincerely,

Duane Dietz
WASLA President
