President's Remarks
Duane Dietz
I’ll keep it short this month. Just a reminder that the Black Landscape Architects Network is offering a number of symposiums in the month of February. The Symposium highlights the important contributions of Black-identifying landscape architecture students, faculty and practitioners. Please visit https://blacklanetwork.com/symposium for more information.
Mark your calendars, the Board has agreed that our annual conference will be held in Spokane on October 8th. It will be nice to see everyone again.
And be sure to put together a WASLA awards submittal. It will be a virtual evening of honors and fun.
As an all-volunteer organization, WASLA is very grateful for people who want to volunteer. Feel free to contact me or any of the Board members to see how you can help contribute to the success of our organization.
Lastly, a big thank you to our sponsors! Be sure to visit their websites, say hello to them at the virtual events, and plan on giving them a hearty fist bump at this October’s conference.
Sincerely,
Duane Dietz WASLA President

WASLA Trivia Night Reflection
The Student and Emerging Professional Committee’s annual Trivia Night was a huge success! Trivia went virtual this year, and with over 50 participants tuning in from Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, Pullman, British Columbia, and even New York, it shows that our landscape architecture community can stay connected and resilient. We would like to give a special thanks to the S&EP Committee for planning and coordinating this event, to Liz Browning for hosting, and to TORO and PLS for sponsoring such a wonderful night.
ASLA Regional Climate Action Network
The ASLA Climate Action Committee is organizing teams of chapter and university program leaders to host a series of regional conversations aimed at addressing climate change issues most pressing to specific regions of the country. WASLA is identifying subject matter experts in Washington to develop a broad Climate Action Network and local action plans. We welcome you to join us in these conversations and help us develop a climate action network within our membership and beyond.
WASLA will be involved in two specific ways.
1. A member of the chapter will be nominated to serve as the Chapter
Climate Action Leader. We are working to establish a broad Climate Action Network within the ASLA membership. This representative will serve as the primary representative of the Chapter and a link between the broader membership, the national Climate Action Committee, and the ASLA National team working on climate change initiatives. The Chapter Climate Action Leader will represent the chapter in regional events as a speaker and participate in future national Climate Action Network meetings. The schedule for these meetings has not been set but is anticipated to be quarterly.
2. Be engaged in planning and promoting the regional climate action
events. We want to engage chapter leadership and leaders of the UW and WSU student chapters, as well as representatives of the landscape architecture programs in planning and executing these virtual events. A primary goal will be to determine the specific regional impacts of climate change as well as the actions being taken by landscape architects to address these impacts.
The first regional virtual event was hosted by the Southeast Coast Region in October 2020 and can be viewed here. The South Pacific Coast Region is planning the second event in March of 2021.
Washington is part of the North Pacific Coast Region, which includes the Oregon, Alaska and Northern California Chapters. If you are interested in playing a role, are regional climate expert, or just to be part of the regional network please contact Duane Dietz at [email protected]

Firm Finder Website Update
We have received a couple of requests for finding landscape firms in Washington state and we have referred them to use ASLA’s Firm Finder website. But some issues came up, so, in checking some of the zip codes on the Firm Finder website we found that not all landscape firms are appearing. We have learned from ASLA that the Firm Finder website uses the office listed in the member’s profile. Please visit https://my.asla.org/my-asla/directories/firm_search.aspx and do a search with your zip code to see if your firm appears. If not, then this is a marketing reminder to all members to make sure your profile is listing the office you are working in.

LA CES Course Offerings
Site Furniture Selection & Placement
Date and Time: Thursday, March 11 at 12pm
Credits: 1.0 LA CES™ PDH
Furniture is just one component in the design of the public realm. Designers should take into consideration the function and goals of the site by focusing on how people will use the location. Navigation patterns and intent to use the amenities within a space are just as important as the aesthetics of the product itself. A flexible product provides countless layout opportunities and can adapt to the site’s functional goals.
Short Description:
- Why Placement Matters
- Product Function and Selection/Product Placement
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) considerations
- Global Alliance for Accessible Technologies and Environments (GAATES) consideration
- Placement of Benches/Bike Racks/Tables and Chairs
More information can be found here.
Course is provided by Maglin Site Furniture.
