The trees and shrubs are green again, the cool weather and rains will soon give way to the warmth of summer. And the circle of life has come around yet again with the first sighting of a pair of newborn fawns. One side effect of the pandemic has been in observing the subtle vagaries of nature every day. I've become attuned to the early morning chattering of the madrone forest ravens before they begin their workday. Hearing owls at night is a real treat. And yet, there is much to do. You will see some notices below about continuing education, another circle of life reminder that we need to keep our licenses in good order. At our board meeting, we talked about holding an event this summer, much like the open studio socials we did pre-pandemic, somewhere outside, where we can get together after hours and see a project and reconnect with each other. Enjoy the long holiday weekend.
Sincerely,

Adaptation Along the Edge: Best Management Practices for Coastal Resilience - 1.0 PDH (LA CES/HSW) Date: May 25, 2022
Time: 01:00PM - 02:00PM
As growth along our nation's coastlines continues to increase, the threat from sea level rise, storm surges, flooding, and unsettled weather patterns are conspiring to make us think differently about how to protect, develop, and manage coastal communities. While the challenges are formidable, there is now a wonderful opportunity to craft a new approach to development and protection-one built on ecological abundance, social equity, and climate. In this session, you will learn about the development of Alys Beach, a new urbanist community located in northwest Florida, which demonstrates sustainability in all key aspects of the Town's carefully crafted vision-architecture, building methods, infrastructure design, and landscape.
You will also learn about efforts underway throughout the country and in Charleston, SC to protect coastal communities using a variety of best management practices, nature-based solutions, and socially just approaches to addressing climate change and the loss of biological diversity.
Speakers: Keith Bowers, FASLA, RLA, PWS, President, Biohabitats, Inc.; Christian Wagley, CNU-A, Principal, Sustainable Town Concepts
