What Is The Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects, Why Does It Exist, and Why Is It Important To Me?

Description:

The main topics that will be covered include landscape restoration strategies for lineal corridors spanning multiple jurisdictions with varying codes and standards; development and application of vegetation clear zone criteria for new light rail transit (LRT) corridors; and environmental component: significance and challenges of early stakeholder/ jurisdictional coordination and community outreach in LRT projects.

Speaker Bios:

Karen Kiest, Board Member, Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects

Karen Kiest has served as a member of the Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects since 2009 and serves as Vice President of the 2018-2019 Board of Directors for the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB). Karen received her first license in California in 1991 and became licensed in Washington in 2002. Her past experience also includes serving on the Seattle Design Commission and the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Board.

Daren Crabill, Board Member, Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects

Daren Crabill serves as the current Board Chair of the Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects and has been a member of the board since 2016. Daren received his first license in Washington in 2010. His past experience also includes serving on the WASLA Executive and Emerging Professionals Committees. Daren was a Fellow of the ULI Sustainable Leadership Institute. In recent years he served on the High Point Neighborhood Architectural Review Committee and the West Seattle Bee Garden Design Project.
Deborah Peters, Board Member, Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects

Deborah Peters has served as a member of the Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects since 2012. Deborah received her first license in Washington in 2005. She graduated in 2000 from the University of Washington and holds a B.A. in Psychology and a BLA. Deborah worked at the Washington State Department of Transportation for 17 years as a manager of the Northwest Region Landscape Architecture office. She has participated in the Model Board project through CLARB, which worked to evaluate best practices in licensure governance, and is currently on the Oversight Committee for LA CES (Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System) for CLARB. Her board participation is focused on strategic planning, and working to continually define the value, evaluate possible changes, and improve the relevancy of licensure for Landscape Architects.

Julia Manley, Board Staff Lead and Licensing Manager, Regulatory Boards Section, Department of Licensing

Ms. Manley has served as the Licensing Manager for the Washington State Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects since 2013. Julia represents the board as a member of the CLARB Member Board Executives Committee and Rethink Regulation Workgroup. As lead staff for the Board, Julia works with board members to facilitate their work and enjoys meeting with students to discuss their journey to licensure and how the board can help them succeed in their endeavors.
