Cedar Crossing Transit-Oriented Development

Project Title: Cedar Crossing Transit-Oriented Development
Landscape Architect: Berger Partnership
Category: Residential Design
Award: Award of Honor
Location: Seattle, WA
Description:
Cedar Crossing exemplifies a much-needed type of housing in our city—high-quality affordable housing convenient to transportation and neighborhood amenities. Built upon the staging site for the Roosevelt Light Rail Station, this transit-oriented development integrates 254 units of affordable housing along with retail, a community playground, a childcare center operated by El Centro de la Raza, and space for social services that adhere to Sound Transit and community stakeholders’ goal of creating a vibrant public place. High-quality, sustainable site design was prioritized early, which set the stage for collaboration on building massing and creating a south-facing courtyard and through-block plaza that provides connections to the fast-growing Roosevelt Urban Village and Roosevelt Light Rail Station. The project prioritized inclusive, accessible spaces for pedestrians and bicyclists infused with visible stormwater and native plantings for habitat and ease of maintenance. The project also enabled a partnership with Seattle Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, and Mary’s Place to reserve 20 housing units for families with children needing complex medical care who are experiencing housing insecurity.
