A Land Art Icon Spurs Access to Nature: Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park

Project Title: A Land Art Icon Spurs Access to Nature: Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park
Landscape Architect: Mithun
Category: Analysis and Planning
Award: Award of Merit
Location: Kent, WA
Description:

Anchored by the iconic Earthworks Park by Bauhaus artist Herbert Bayer, the community vision of Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park centers nature-based experiences in the City of Kent. A destination for Kent and the Puget Sound region, Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park is a place intergenerational families can enjoy the dynamic, seasonal forest, meadow and creek experiences, art and cultural events and actively engage in stewarding those resources. Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks Park Framework Plan is a long-term reinvestment plan for this 105-acre anchor parkin the Kent Park system. The park plan expands access to nature-based experiences and infrastructure in one of the most racially diverse communities in Washington state. Prompted by the acquisition of multiple properties within the park and canyon by Kent Parks and the future redevelopment potential around the canyon, the plan adapts to current demographic, climate change and equity issues. The focus of the plan is on creating a welcoming, coherent trailhead system, a variety of trail experiences and walkable, accessible connections.
