Winter has been a real let down this year. It seems to be the thing we are all talking about. However, the sun has finally decided to peak out from behind the clouds in central Washington. Despite the fact that it is still February, I can’t help but think about bicycling and hiking in the Wenatchee Foothills. Believe me, I will be taking advantage of the weather this weekend. All of you can take advantage of our excellent Spring weather at the conference in May. We have received a number of excellent session proposals and are in the process of reviewing them and putting together what looks to be an excellent schedule of educational presentations. Registration for the conference will be open soon and we hope you all plan on treating the annual meeting as an outing as opposed to a day somewhere other than your office in the Puget Sound or Spokane.

The only constant in life is change. Change is the seasons, it is our climate, and it is our personal lives. As landscape designers, we embrace change and know it well. We see it happen in the projects we create, and learn how to use it to our advantage. In a way, we must attempt to premeditate, to capture the changes, and watch them unfold accordingly. Sometimes change can be unsettling, but if we take note of what is happening outdoors, within our built environment and beyond, we can take comfort in knowing that it is the only thing that stays the same. I hope that you too can find inspiration in this, and that it will stay with you, if only for a little while.

2015 Conference Registration to Open Next Month!
Registration for WASLA's 2015 Annual Conference is scheduled to open the first week of March!
The conference will be taking place Friday through Saturday, May 29-30, 2015, at the Wenatchee Convention Center in Wenatchee, WA.
Stay tuned for more information, as well as the conference registration form, by checking your email and our website early next month...We hope to see you all there!

Celebrate Landscape Architecture Month with a Community Design Charette!
Kendall, WA, April 24-25, 2015
As noted in the previous newsletter (in January), a National Park Service-RTCA/WASLA charrette is scheduled for April 24-25 (1/2 day Friday, full day Saturday) in Kendall, WA (Whatcom County). This event will be one of the events held by WASLA during Landscape Architecture Month.

The Seattle Design Festival will be held on September 11th – 25th, 2015. The festival theme for 2015 is Design for Equity.

Seeing the Tapestry: A Review of "Detroit Future City"
Detroit is roughly the same size as Portland, OR, and is slightly denser. And yet, when you think about Detroit, what do you envision?
Before I went to the Detroit Future City panel this past month, I always imagined Detroit as a city with life, but mostly as a city with weeds piercing the sidewalks, crumbling vacant buildings, and tiny urban vegetable gardens springing up in between. I had heard the cityscape referred to as a “playground for designers,” ripe with opportunities to rebuild and re-launch a city that had dwindled in size but is starting to make a comeback. On August 8, 2012, we lost our teacher, mentor, and friend all too soon.

UW Landscape Architecture Internship/ Practicum Portal
UWLA PAC, Internship + Research Committee
The Landscape Department at the University of Washington has been working hard on providing its students with valuable resources that can better connect them with local employers for internships and practicum opportunities.
Prior to developing these resources we sent a survey to our local employer list to get feedback on what firms wanted and if they would use specific resources. We took this information and over the summer developed a space where employers can submit internships and practicums and positions to a page that is only accessible by our students...
