President's Remarks

Hello WASLA Members,

I can’t believe it’s already February! Things are moving quickly as we plan for the upcoming WASLA Awards and other exciting events.

A fun UW event is coming up—a screening of Sitting Still on March 5th. Then, on April 10th, the Student and Emerging Professionals Committee is bringing back Trivia Night at Kells Pub in Seattle—always a great time to connect and test your knowledge! Looking ahead, mark your calendars for May 14th, when we’ll celebrate the WASLA Awards at the Georgetown Ballroom in Seattle.

Today, I had the privilege of reviewing student scholarship essays, and I have to say—it’s inspiring to see their fresh perspectives, passion for the profession, and vision for how landscape architecture can create meaningful change. Their thoughts serve as a reminder of how the next generation will shape and evolve our field, tackling challenges and introducing new ideas that will ultimately make our world a better place.

It also makes me step back from the day-to-day work—deadlines, deliverables, and project demands—and think about the bigger picture. As landscape architects, we have the opportunity to contribute to something much larger, working toward long-term goals that positively impact our communities, environment, and future.

With that in mind, I want to acknowledge our colleagues and those working in the federal government who have fought for and acted as stewards of our public lands and open spaces—and continue to do so. As professionals, volunteers, and citizens, we will keep advocating for our profession, supporting one another, and championing the natural world we care so deeply about.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at events in the coming months!

Best,

 Mike Faulkner

Film Screening at UW

SAVE THE DATE!!

SITTING STILL: a 90-minute documentary film Directed, Produced & Written by Gina M. Angelone Featuring Laurie Olin

UW Landscape Architecture, UW Landscape Architecture PAC and WASLA will be hosting a film screening on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, 5:30-7:45 pm in Gould Hall, Room 322.

SITTING STILL is an original documentary that focuses on one of the world’s most preeminent landscape architects and his profoundly social vision. Hailed as a modern-day Olmsted, Laurie Olin has helped transform the design of public space, revitalize the American city, and pave the way for future design leaders. This portrait of an artist is told through a prism of issues which have defined Olin’s life and work for the past fifty years: urbanization and our lost connection to nature, economic marginalization, and the grave importance of humanity in design.

SITTING STILL gets inside the mind of a prophetic and visionary urban designer to see what he sees. In a time when global values increasingly reflect “profit over people,” Olin's vision has always been to create a more democratic and egalitarian society through healthy, shared public space. SITTING STILL invites the voices of other design luminaries into the conversation, including preeminent architects Frank Gehry and Billie Tsien, and esteemed landscape designer and artist, Walter Hood, among others. According to these global thinkers and designers, environmental and human stakes have never been higher, and the most pressing challenges of the natural environment and social disunity can be addressed in how we think about the marks we make upon the land.

This is a free event - please REGISTER using the 'Sign-up' button by Tuesday February 25th.
