Hello WASLA Members,
Now that the Seahawks are once again Super Bowl Champions! It’s time to turn our attention back to Tacoma and the return of our Spring Conference. All joking aside, we’re looking forward to gathering again, building on the strong tradition of past conferences.
RECLAIM brings together field sessions, lectures, panels, and workshops centered on restoration, resilience, and responsibility - themes that continue to shape our profession.
We were amazed to receive 37 conference submissions, nearly double what we anticipated. Narrowing the program to fit our schedule and capacity was tough, but the depth and quality of the proposals were truly inspiring. Many spoke directly to our theme, underscoring how much impactful, forward-looking work is happening across Washington and beyond. Thank you to all who submitted.
Sessions will explore climate action at multiple scales, revisit beloved legacy projects like Gas Works Park and Seattle Center, and examine the transformation of former industrial scars into vibrant civic places. We’ll also dive into shoreline restoration strategies and other applied approaches that elevate ecological performance in our work. Tacoma-based field sessions will explore completed projects, allowing us to experience restoration and renewal firsthand.
We look forward to gathering once again in Tacoma to celebrate our collective efforts and discuss where we go next.

Message from the Board of Licensure for Landscape Architects
|
The Board is continuing to examine the high cost of license renewal and working with WASLA and CLARB to explore ways to potentially reduce fees. This message looks at what the other WA design professions are paying and what landscape architects in other comparable states are paying as well.
In Washington, landscape architect license renewal fees are about five times the average of what architects and engineers pay for a two-year license renewal. How is that possible and justifiable? It is all about the numbers. The chart below illustrates the benefit of being in a profession with high numbers of licensees.
|
The architect and landscape architect boards are administered by the Division of Licensing (DOL). In 2019, the engineers and surveyors board became its own state agency apart from the Division of Licensing.
Some states have combined boards which, at least in theory, could be more efficient. CLARB prepared this table showing states with roughly similar numbers of licensees to illustrate the renewal fees and board types.
|
As noted in our last message from the Board, some boards, like Washington and Oregon, are self-supporting as opposed to states like Idaho where the board is supported by the state general fund.
Would You Like to Comment?
The Washington Board plans to discuss ideas for potentially reducing license renewal fees at our next scheduled meeting on May 7th at 10:00 a.m. All meetings are held virtually through Microsoft Teams. Please check the for options on addressing the Board or submitting written comments on the Board website.
