President's Remarks

Hello WASLA Members,

The official Call for Entries for the 2025 WASLA Awards is out - spread the word and get your project submittals ready! Save the date: May 14th at the Georgetown Ballroom in Seattle—we can't wait to celebrate the incredible work happening across our state.

Our board of dedicated volunteers has been hard at work, recently undertaking a monumental effort reviewing 120 award submissions from Texas! A huge thank you to all the volunteers, jurors, and our Trustee, Tim Slazinik, for making this possible. Now, it’s Texas’ turn to review our submissions—so let’s see if we can bump up our numbers this year!

In other news, the board recently met with NPS-RTCA (Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program) after renewing our six-year contract with them earlier this year. Over the years, WASLA has supported this program through charrettes and design assistance, leading to meaningful collaborations and projects that have strengthened our communities. Fun fact—while NPS-RTCA partners with ASLA chapters across the country, WASLA was the first to establish this partnership!

Keep that in mind as you test your knowledge at our 8th Annual Trivia Night on April 10th at Kells Irish Pub! Challenge your fellow landscape architecture professionals and see if your team can claim the title of Trivia Champion.

A huge thank you to all our board members and volunteers who make these great events possible throughout the year. Your dedication and generosity—on top of already busy schedules—do not go unnoticed. At the end of the day, it’s about building relationships, strengthening our community, and celebrating our collective hard work.

As always, if you're interested in getting more involved with WASLA, we’d love to hear from you!

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

 Mike Faulkner

LA PAC Spring Lecture | David Godshall, TERREMOTO: Doing Right by Land and Each Other; Gardens for the Next World

David Godshall, co-founder of TERREMOTO, will give our PAC Spring Lecture.

If gardens are mirrors of culture, and our present culture is a hot mess, how might we go about making gardens that reject the materially consumptive and ecology destroying power of late-stage capitalism? TERREMOTO believes that through self-investigation into our relationships to Land, Labor, Materials and Ecology, we can forge a new path and paradigm and create landscapes that are in service of the whole.
