President's Remarks

Hello WASLA Members,

Spring is upon us. After the late snowfall, cherry blossoms are in full bloom, along with sunbreaks and the return of spring showers. It was great to see freshly snow-covered mountains again, and I was fortunate to get up into the mountains a couple of times recently. I was also struck by how full Keechelus Lake is right now.

I hope you’re all finding time to get outside and enjoy our parks, trails, and wild places as we move into spring here in the Pacific Northwest. It really is one of the best times of year.

With that, the WASLA Board has been busy planning for the upcoming event season, which kicks off in about a month. Here’s what’s ahead:

  • Trivia Night – April 22 – Kells Irish Pub
  • 2026 WASLA Annual Conference – May 7–9 – Tacoma Marriott Downtown
  • Field Day – August 14 – UW Campus
  • WASLA Awards – October 21 – Georgetown Ballroom

Our last big event was back in September, so we’re looking forward to reconnecting with many of you in person. I’m especially excited about the WASLA Conference, it should be a great opportunity to hear about the projects and ideas shaping how we restore and improve our urban and natural environments.

Trivia Night is just around the corner as well, it’s always a fun, competitive, and well-attended event. We hope to see you there.

Thanks, as always, for your continued support of WASLA and for helping make this such a strong and engaged community.

Mike Faulkner

   WASLA President

Generation: RE

What does it look like to design regeneratively? How can we move beyond mitigation to actively restore ecological systems, repair social and cultural relationships, and strengthen the capacity of landscapes to evolve over time? “Generation: RE” aims to advance landscape architecture as a catalyst for ecological and social renewal.

Landscape architects are uniquely positioned to work across scales, linking plants, soil, water, biodiversity, infrastructure, and community knowledge to deploy regeneration for maximum impact. The symposium brings together practitioners, researchers, and fellow travelers to examine how regenerative thinking can be embedded in design processes, policy, and built work. It asks critical questions: Whose knowledge guides regeneration? How do landscapes heal? And how can design support living systems working within an extractive-based world?
