President's Remarks

Hello WASLA Members,

We had a fantastic time at WASLA 2026 RECLAIM in Tacoma. With more than 250 attendees, we were very appreciative of the high quality of the educational sessions, speakers, and walking tours centered around restoration, resilience, and community. It was great to get together, learn, walk, and celebrate our collective efforts.

A huge thank you to OrgSupport for helping coordinate and organize the conference, along with our sponsors, planning committee, WASLA board members, and everyone who helped host rooms, tours, and events throughout the week. These gatherings only happen because of those willing to contribute their time and energy to bringing the community together.

Beyond events, the WASLA Board continues to support a wide range of efforts throughout the year, from coordinating with ASLA and supporting national advocacy initiatives, to providing scholarship and educational opportunities for UW and WSU students, to ensuring the long-term health and stability of the chapter itself.

With the conference now wrapped up, we’re shifting our focus toward this summer’s Field Day, where we’ll explore the remarkable University of Washington campus through a series of walking tours and outdoor experiences. We’re looking forward to another opportunity to gather, learn, and spend time together outdoors.

Finally, board elections will be coming up soon. If you’ve ever considered getting involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of the current board members. Serving on the board is a great opportunity to give back to the profession, connect with colleagues across the state, and help shape the future of landscape architecture in Washington. There are a variety of opportunities to match different interests, schedules, and levels of availability.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make RECLAIM a success. We hope to see you again soon

Best regards,

Mike Faulkner

   WASLA President

2026 WASLA Field Day

Call for Walking Tour Proposals for the 2026 Field Day at University of Washington

The University of Washington campus offers one of the region’s most memorable settings to experience the relationship between landscape, architecture, and the city. From the legacy of the 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition and the Olmsted Brothers planning framework to the evolving campus today, UW reflects a layered landscape shaped by formal vistas, historic spaces, iconic views, promenades, and contemporary investments in ecology, mobility, and the public realm.

Field Day invites participants to explore these landscapes firsthand through walking tours and conversation. WASLA is seeking engaging tours led by designers, planners, educators, and others who can share insight into the landscapes, infrastructure, public spaces, ecological systems, and ideas shaping the UW campus and surrounding U District past, present, and future.

Field Day will be held Friday, August 14, 2026.
