President's Remarks

Duane Dietz

April has been a busy month, and on top of it all - it’s World Landscape Architecture Month. April 15th WASLA held its annual awards meeting, congratulations to all the award winners, thank you to our wonderful sponsors, and thank all of you who attended virtually. There is a link to the awards ceremony for those of you who missed it, see down below in the newsletter.

We are continuing to provide you with continuing education opportunities as they become available. We send time critical ones via email, we will also post them here in the newsletter. Our sponsors are creating informative content that meets the HSW credits needed for renewing your license. Take advantage of these opportunities now and support our sponsors.

Lastly, as we start to see the horizon of normality ahead of us, please consider volunteering for WASLA. We have our local conference coming up in October, we have committees that could use new voices and perspectives, and we are also starting the process for electing new board members. Now is the time to help support WASLA.

Sincerely,

Duane Dietz
WASLA President

 ASLA’s Tools for PreK-12 Teachers

ASLA’s Tools for PreK-12 Teachers web page was recently redesigned to enhance its delivery of resources during the pandemic. It has become the destination for instructional materials focused on landscape architecture, the environment, community building, and design learning during nationwide school closures. Visit ASLA’s Tools for PreK-12 Teachers and explore our outstanding collection of resources. Also, join ASLA’s growing community of prek-12 advocates, learn about our work in STEM education, and save the date for ASLA’s first PreK-12 Summit DREAM BIG with Design, A Showcase of Landscape Architecture and PreK-12 Design Learning on Thursday, September 23 and Friday, September 24, 2021.

Help Build the ASLA Environmental Justice PPN’s Case Studies Database

The EJ PPN is collecting case studies to share examples of how to integrate environmental justice into our field of practice. You may submit your case study by completing this online form, which has a series of questions to collect information about engagement techniques, resources used, project outcomes, and lessons learned. Examples of incorporating environmental justice into your projects may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • design processes that center on community voices
  • projects that address disproportionate environmental burdens
  • outcomes that honor the cultural integrity of all communities

Raster Classes at UW

Good with ArcGIS and feel like sharing? The PAC is looking for a volunteer to lead a ‘Raster Class’ for ArcGIS on April 27th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. These Raster Classes are an opportunity for professionals to share their tips, tricks, and techniques with students for various design related software’s and skills. These classes are meant to be casual and conversational. An outline of topics to cover should be prepared as a starting point but through Q/A and discussion these skill shares should really cater to the students in attendance. The event will be held on zoom so the volunteer will need to have ArcGIS available to screen share for the class. Feel free to reach out to Jack Alderman ([email protected]) if you have any follow up questions!
