President's Remarks
Duane Dietz
December is the time to get together with family and friends and reflect on the past year. Last night, I took the water taxi from Vashon to downtown Seattle under a crescent moon to attended Grant Jones’ memorial. Listening to the stories being told, what resonated within me was gratitude. Gratitude for his impact on my life and career. Our paths in life are marked by the people who teach us, mentor us and work with us. For me, I am grateful to count among my influencers Rich Haag, Iain Robertson, Art Rice, and David Streatfield at the University of Washington. Grant Jones, Ilze Jones, Johnpaul Jones, Curt Miller, Steve Durrant, and Maggi Johnson at Jones & Jones. Bill Evans, Paul Comstock, and Zofia Kostryko at Walt Disney Imagineering. And the gentleman that is Len Zickler at AHBL. As we approach the holidays, reflect on those who have influenced you in your career path. Send them a note or given them a call to say thanks. It is gratitude that you are sowing for the next generation of landscape architects.
I want to give thanks to all our WASLA volunteers who have gone above and beyond in supporting the various committees, social hours, trivia nights, student award juries and so much more. It is also a reminder that we welcome your support as a volunteer.
I was to say thank you to WASLA past president Tim Slazinik, member-at-large statewide Kiwon Suh, and member-at-large Eastern Washington Steele Fitzloff for their service on the WASLA Board of Directors.
I want to say welcome aboard and thank you to the new board members: president-elect Nick Zurlini, member-at-large statewide Maureen Colaizzi, member-at-large Western Washington Mike Faulkner, and member-at-large Eastern Washington Jonathan Smith. I look forward to working with you in 2022 and beyond.
I also want to give special thanks to the ongoing board members Marieke Lacasse, Dean Koonts, and Jason Henry. Here is looking to 2022!
I am also grateful to all our sponsors who have supported WASLA! Your involvement makes our profession shine.
Lastly, I invite you all to virtually attend the Annual Membership meeting on December 17th. We’ll be discussing what to do in 2022.
Sincerely,
Duane Dietz WASLA President
