President's Remarks
Tim Slazinik
Another ASLA Meeting and Expo had come and gone, and with that, our local chapter changing of the guard has occurred. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to you all as we kick off another great year in the Washington Chapter of ASLA. I should begin by thanking our Past-President, Laura Thompson. Laura has led our Chapter and Board of Directors with a passion an energy that has moved us forward, progressing our work in advocacy at the state level, defending licensure, promoting awareness, and forging lasting partnerships. Laura has also become a true friend, and I hope you will all join me in thanking her for her service to the chapter.
 As for me, I am a landscape Architect and Project Manager at GGLO, University of Illinois Graduate, and long-time ASLA volunteer. Having served previously in our chapter as Membership Chair and Member at Large, as well as Secretary, and President of the St. Louis ASLA Chapter, I come to this position with an intention to keep our momentum going forward. Building on our progress, I hope to forge stronger connections between our committees and the Board of Directors, with a hope that improved communication with our chapter members can ensure that we are providing the services and support that Washington Landscape Architects need. Licensure threats are always possible, and with our 2019 conference we will be bringing advocacy front and center. Awareness is more vital than ever, as we begin new outreach efforts to strengthen the future of our profession at university and K-12 levels. And of course, we will continue educational and social opportunities for our members to engage and elevate our members through networking and CEU opportunities.
I welcome our new board members and new chapter volunteers as well. If you have been thinking of engaging in a chapter event or volunteering on a committee, there is no time like the present. There are so many ways to make an impact through WASLA and ASLA, and we hope we will see you soon. ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo
From Pullman, Washington to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo. The expo was full of new and exciting experiences filled with wonder and knowledge. It’s quite amazing to be surrounded by professionals with the same passion I have for landscape architecture. I started the expo by attending the Chapter Presidents Council with the state chapters and Laura Thompson and Tim Slazinik as the WASLA chapter. I was afforded an inside look at ASLA’s efforts to improve the education and awareness of the profession. Being present at this meeting expanded the scope of my understanding and importance of the behind the scenes work ASLA’s state chapters do to advocate for landscape architecture. This Expo week was off to a great start.
When registering for this event over the summer, I signed up for a field session that would immerse me into the streets of Philadelphia. The “Like a Local” walking tour field session explored special sites of central Philadelphia like Washington Square park, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens by Isaiah Zagar, and a few special and historic residences. This tour highlighted some of Philadelphia’s most historic and awe-inspiring places. By Saturday and Sunday, the guest speakers, education sessions, Professional Practice Network Live events, and expo continued to solidify the importance of student attendance to this national conference. The conference also featured its first students and emerging professionals’ reception where I was able to meet and mingle with new landscape architecture professionals and current students studying landscape architecture, asking them questions about their program and relating to similar issues in their programs that I have faced in my student career.
A favorite moment of mine was attending the Women in Landscape Architecture Professional Practice Network live and getting to listen to women in the profession discuss how they began their involvement in ASLA and addressing challenges they conquered in their careers.
With the abundant information, the networking, and the swag items from the expo companies the ASLA Annual Meeting and Expo was a tremendous experience.

Seattle Design Commission Vacancy
The Seattle Design Commission (SDC) is recruiting for a landscape architect to join the commission. The SDC makes recommendations on the design of capital facilities, projects that impact rights of way, and projects that seek a street or alley vacation. The new commissioner will be appointed for a two year term beginning in March 2019. Commission meetings are the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month. Commissioners serve between 15 to 20 hours per month and receive a small stipend for their service. The SDC is accepting letters-of-interest and résumés until November 30, 2018. LARE Prep Session with Corson Learning
On November 2nd and 3rd, the Student + Emerging Professionals Committee hosted an LARE Prep Session covering Section 1: Project and Construction Management and Section 4: Grading, Drainage, and Construction Documents. Cheryl Corson of Corson Learning led both sessions, which were attended by 41 people from as far away as Charleston, South Carolina!
