2017 Annual WASLA Conference
Spokane Convention Center, April 21, 2017 One Day, Dynamic Sessions, Ultimate Location
8:20-9:20 AM Confluence: The History, Culture, and Future of Spokane’s Public Landscapes
Description:
Spokane has a rich legacy of parks and open spaces, abundant in quantity and rich in diversity, from formal parks to natural areas. These spaces that profoundly shape the city’s character and lifestyle were the result of visionary planning and conservation starting a century ago and continuing today.
This General Session, presented by three landscape architects, sets the tone for the day as we consider Where History Meets Nature in the process of city planning and place-shaping.
Michael Terrell provides an overview of Spokane’s park system and urban planning, beginning with the Olmsted Brothers Report. Garrett Jones moves the discussion forward to today and shares the city’s expanded environmental stewardship that extends beyond the park system. Guy Michaelsen reaches into the city’s future by reimagining connections to a forgotten shared past and a legacy that is returned to Spokane’s next generations.
