Evolving Histories: Designing Deeply Rooted, Authentic Places for 21st Century Places

Description:

Often a site’s history can be frozen in time, reflecting the attitudes and thoughts of that time.  The challenge to the designer and/or historic preservationist is to respect the past while creating relevant place that engages future generations. Through the lens of three recent GGLO projects in the Treasure Valley, Idaho: Indian Creek Plaza, Ann Morrison Park, and Spaulding Ranch, we will explore how to leverage cultural and natural histories to create authentic public spaces while looking toward innovation to make active, regional destinations. Each one of these projects has a unique story, a brand new plaza designed to revive a historic downtown, a 1950’s suburban park that has found itself in the middle of a booming urban center, and an 1800’s farmstead on the National Register of Historic Places in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Each one has a different path towards evolving its history.
