BIM Bam Boom: Our Story of Revit and Where it Might Go From Here

Description:

Adoption of new technology is rarely for the faint of heart. After witnessing strong collaboration between contractors and architects using building information modeling (BIM) as a medium for communication, HEWITT’s landscape architecture studio decided to transition to solely using Revit for design documentation. There have been significant challenges and great benefits in transitioning to a software ultimately not designed for landscape architects, but used by many of our collaborators. We want to share these experiences and build on them, identifying the potential this tool has for changing how we communicate with our clients and our peers. Our presentation will be grounded in samples of our work flow and process to show examples of this tool in use.

Lead Speaker:

Jake Woland

Speaker Bios:

Jake Woland, Senior Associate, HEWITT
With 17 years of experience as a Landscape Architect and Urban Designer, Jake Woland leads design teams through the development of innovative concepts that focus on unique project possibilities and constraints. His passion lies in bringing craft to green infrastructure including green roofs, urban agriculture, and sustainable construction practices.

David Bramer, Landscape Architect, HEWITT
An early love for the outdoors shaped Dave Bramer's view on the environment. It is with this sensitivity that he draws upon for design interventions in urban landscapes. He also draws upon his diverse background for perspective in how seasonality can highlight different aspects of landscape design. Passionate about collaboration, Dave seeks out project design methods and visualization technologies that help clients, consultants, and stakeholders discover a common project vision.

Learning Objectives:
  • The “What?”: Understand the range of pitfalls and benefits that implementation of Revit presents.
  • The “Why?”: Understand how Revit can aid project teams by automating documentation processes and facilitating interdisciplinary coordination, while offering 3D representation of design problems.
  • The “How?”: Learn how landscape architects are using Revit and other building information modeling (BIM) technologies to engage with other disciplines, contractors, and clients.
  • The “What If?”: Learn about future BIM implementation goals that can impact design visualization and inform policy and jurisdiction code.
