Feriton Spur Park ExtensionProject Title: Feriton Spur Park Extension The expansion of Feriton Spur Park on the Cross Kirkland Corridor (CKC) represents a benchmark in civic landscape architecture that celebrates history, fosters environmental stewardship, and delivers inclusive recreational and social value to the local community. As a collaboration of multiple project sponsors—City of Kirkland, Google, SRM Development, and the Kirkland Downtown Association—the project demonstrates the value of public-partnerships in advancing civic projects for community placemaking. The park’s design responds directly to the site’s industrial and transportation legacy. Once a railroad spur serving maritime and manufacturing industries, including a chicken feed plant and a door manufacturer, the land held deep layers of local history. The design team leaned into this legacy by preserving and reimagining historical references—from the decorative water tower that mimics steam-era train infrastructure to the Kalakala’s sculptural remnants and interpretive placemaking elements that weave a historical storyline into the physical fabric of the park. Feriton Spur Park is a model of what civic green space can achieve: it celebrates the convergence of history and history making, ecosystem restoration and resilience, and community activation and empowerment. Through a collaborative design and implementation process, the park exemplifies the highest standards in public landscape architecture and leaves a lasting legacy for Kirkland and beyond. |
