UC Riverside North District + Dundee and GlasgowProject Title: UC Riverside North District + Dundee and Glasgow The landscapes in this project offer rich outdoor experiences at all scales from private and contemplative, to community gathering and recreation; the distinctiveness of each space distinguishes neighborhoods high-density new residential and dining buildings throughout this large new district. The landscapes articulately integrate new climate-adaptive and native plant palettes in a manner that feels like a natural extension of existing traditional collegiate landscape typologies and established a new standard for UC Riverside to shift away from water-intensive collegiate landscapes. This project consists of two phases of new construction and one phase of renovation/replacement spanning the northern portion of the UCR campus, comprising 29 acres of the overall 50-acre North District. The combined projects include over 3000 beds, shared dining hall, campus open spaces, recreation fields, pedestrian promenade, courtyards, and streetscape. The social context of UC Riverside is an important influence on this project. The university as one of the highest first-generation college student populations in the UC system and is highly racially diverse, and the North District is also an innovative collaboration providing housing for transitional students from Riverside Community College to acclimate to college life. The project aesthetic draws from the campus mid-century forms and textures, providing continuity through building forms and materials reflected in the landscape elements. Strategies include use of materials such as decomposed granite, pavers, and wood to provide more visual interest and comfortable seating; architectural plantings that evolve from formal to natural as they move from the buildings; and attention to the interior-exterior visual and physical connections. |
