4th and Willis Gateway & Greenways

Project Title: 4th and Willis Gateway & Greenways
Landscape Architect: Psomas
Category: General Design | Public Ownership
Award: Award of Merit
Location: Kent, WA
Description:

The intersection of Willis Street and 4th Avenue South is a major gateway into the City of Kent, including residential neighborhoods, industrial areas, and downtown. Willis Street is the terminus of SR-516, connecting to I-5 and SR-167 to the west, and carries high volumes of vehicle traffic into the city. The existing signalized intersection was highly vehicle-centric, with up to6 lanes of traffic, high speed vehicles, excessively wide crosswalks, and a poor public perception of security, safety and comfort.

The collaborative and inclusive spirit of this project did not end when the design was completed. The complexity of the gateway sculptures required ongoing coordination between designers, local fabricators, and the contractor to successfully implement the full vision and ensure that all elements fit together as designed. From reviewing shop drawing, field-verifying the footing layout and elevations, and programming and synching the lighting system, to coordinating with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT)and the nearby fire station for temporary roundabout closures for crane access, every detail had to be thought through and communicated to a range of trades and stakeholders.

Ultimately, this project created a new communal ‘front yard’, bridged two different neighborhoods with the natural surrounding area, and provided a sense of ownership and pride for the community broadly.

Since its completion in 2020, the4th& Willis Gateway and Greenways project has transformed this entrance into the City of Kent, putting the safety and comfort of non-motorized users at the forefront while bringing a sense of belonging to this vibrant and diverse community.
